Aging in Idaho: Housing Problems for Seniors
Can you imagine not having a safe place to sleep, or to accomplish the basic necessities of daily living, such as taking showers or preparing meals? That’s the reality of some senior citizens in our community, and more are on the brink of becoming homeless. Some seniors have already chosen medical care over food, and now they have lost their place of residence.
Insufficient retirement income is one reason that seniors are becoming homeless. Even when the mortgage is paid off, older adults must pay for utilities, taxes and general maintenance. For example, replacing a hot water heater can be difficult on a fixed income. Some seniors cannot afford rent payments when combined with doctor visits and costs for transportation.
Some working seniors face a similar crisis. They must choose between housing and basic necessities. Some seniors are unemployed or underemployed due to age discrimination, and others do not have the skills or motivation to earn higher wages. While some organizations are trying to make an impact, the waiting list for housing is extensive.
